Film #34: AMY
4 out of 5 stars
A fascinating look at celebrity, fame, and the price one pays for same as seen thru the career of Amy Winehouse. Told in interviews and archival footage which makes for an intriguing and in-depth look at the artist – alienated by their talent, tortured by the press, and the industry… forever with their hands your for your next thing. I will warn you that this is a terribly sad documentary – especially as we all know how this ends. What’s infuriating about Amy’s story is how no one supported her… not the label, not her parents, not her management, and certainly not the men in her life (one of which injected her with heroin the day after she’d overdosed). Heartbreaking and beautiful (in its way), AMY calls into question all you know about the woman behind the music. Keep an eye out for the “Tony Bennet moment” because it’s pretty amazing. Sad, but fascinating… recommended.
