Film #285: NORWEGIAN NINJA aka KOMMANDER TREHOLT & NINJATROPPEN
Norwegian Ninja (aka Kommandør Treholt & Ninjatroppen)
3 out of 5 stars
An utterly ridiculous farce about a secret branch of the Norwegian military that employ ninjas as a kind of peace-keeping force. Intentionally broad and persistently preposterous, NORWEGIAN NINJA has the feel of an '80s action film as seen through the eyes of Ed Wood. Despite its low budget (which somehow makes the film BETTER), the flick is able to draw its audience in and has us pulling for it even though it is, well... let’s admit it… kind of stupid. The actors are so earnest in their roles that, all too soon, the viewer signs on wholeheartedly and is ready for the story to unspool. It would be too easy to brush NORWEGIAN NINJA aside as simply being silly, but scratch the surface and you’ll see a film that understands the genre it is lampooning all too well. In the end, NORWEGIAN NINJA is a fun little time-waster perfect for a night with friends or for a time you want something different and have already seen all of the Matt Helm or OUR MAN FLINT movies. Fun, infectious, and… just kooky enough to really like.
