Film #62: LATE PHASES
2 out of 5 stars
Director Adrian Garcia Bogliano (COLD SWEAT, ABC’S OF DEATH) directs this tale of a werewolf loose in a retirement community. Sterner is tone than a lot of werewolf films, LATE PHASES sits comfortably on the shelf next to titles like CYCLE OF THE WEREWOLF as well as BUBBA HO-TEP. Low budget but handled well, the production was smart enough to do two things: hire Robert Kurtzman to do the FX (even though the monster is clearly a guy in a suit) and cast the criminally under-appreciated Nick Damici (STAKELAND). Acting is solid even if the characters they play are weakly written and cliché. Damici carries the film and, despite his best efforts, the character is simply too young to be playing a geriatric man. While the film does its best with what it has, it’s not until the story’s resolution that things really fall apart. Flawed, poorly written, and a bit of a disappointment, LATE PHASES is for werewolf completists or Damici fans. OK… but simply hobble by an inane script.
