Film #49: LUCY
1.5 out of 5 stars
Director Luc Besson directs this tale of a normal woman “enhanced” by a drug to utilize all 100% of his brain’s capacity. Reportedly, the film took ten years to make it to the screen with people like Angelina Jolie and Milla Jovovich attached. Why it took so long is anyone’s guess. As for the film itself, while it is well-made, the film is incomprehensibly contrived. The premise is thin even by Luc Besson standards and is mainly there so that Scarlet Johansson can kick ass. I mean, it feels like the result of Besson hearing an odd fact (humans only use 10% of their brain) at a cocktail party and deciding to make a flick about it. While the look of the film is fine (as is the acting), the leaps in logic are enough to make your head spin. Even the action is silly and should have been a lot better (I mean, it’s an ACTION film, ferchrissake!). Fans of Besson will have surely learned to overlook the director’s shortcomings. Others… may find Johansson’s rather robotic portrayal grating. See it because the idea is nifty… just don’t expect much.
