Film #76: THE ECLIPSE
3 out of 5 stars
More of a character study and relationship film than pure ghost story, this is a tale about loss, grief, and coming to terms with the death of a loved one. In a very atypical role, Ciarán Hinds (IN BRUGES, MUNICH) gives a terrific performance as Conor McPherson, a man whose wife has recently died. His nights are plagued with visions of someone walking the halls of his home and his emotional state is fragile, at best. Against the backdrop of a literary festival in his home town, he meets a woman writer played by Iben Hjejle (HIGH FIDELITY) with a bit of a history with another guy (played with drunken abandon by Aidan Quinn). While there are moments of shock, the story is mostly directed toward McPherson’s interior battle with grief. If you go into this film expecting a spook show, you’ll be disappointed. However, the performances make the journey worthwhile.
