Film #77: UNCLE BOONMEE WHO CAN RECALL HIS PAST LIVES
Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives
3 out of 5 stars
A lyrical although admittedly slow examination of Thai folk legend and perspectives on the afterlife. The pace is glacier slow and the narrative is never laid out before the audience with all the ribbons tied tight. Instead, we get moments of beauty (Thailand is presented in an absolutely stunning light) and introspection. Sadly (for Western viewers), there is a LOT of subtlety here that demands some knowledge of Thai customs, but an attentive viewer can make it through. While not for everyone, UNCLE BOONMEE is a stunning visual feast despite the fact that the story itself can meander a bit and become unfocused. Good stuff… especially for the attentive viewer.
