Film #80: THE EROTICIST
2 out of 5 stars
Before Italian director Lucio Fulci became known for his masterpieces of gore, he did time doing some westerns, some comedies and sex farces. THE EROTICIST (aka ALL'ONOREVOLE PIACCIONO LE DONNE aka THE SENATOR LIKES WOMEN) is a light-hearted little romp from 1972 about a presidential candidate with a predilection for grabbing women’s asses. The plot is suitably convoluted with some nudity thrown in to keep things randy. What’s interesting is to keep one’s eyes peeled for flourishes from Fulci that would make their way into his later films. THE EROTICIST also serves as a glimpse into late ‘60s / early ‘70s Italian culture and what they found “sexy.” In the end though, THE EROTICIST is a little-known Fulci film and that’s for a very good reason - it’s no masterpiece. However, the film is still able to hold one’s interest and there are a few laughs (even if they are a bit dated). Fulci completists will want to add this to their lists, but… unless you’re a rabid Fulci fan, you might want to skip this one.
