Film #107: LE DOULOS
4 out of 5 stars
Carlo Ponti produces this intricately plotted 1962 Jean-Pierre Melville film noir. The cast is exemplary (especially Jean-Paul Belmondo) and Melville is in fine form here (including a wonderful shot which was done in one take and lasts an amazing 8 minutes). Shot in luscious black & white, the film has so many unexpected twists and turns that you’ll never see the ending coming. Wonderful, dark, and oozing atmosphere, LE DOULOS examines topics such as loyalty, betrayal, revenge, and ultimately friendship. I hesitate to say too much for fear of ruining the carefully crafted surprises. Suffice it to say that the film is a stunning work and one that is HIGHLY recommended.
