Film #113: STORY OF A PROSTITUTE
Story of a Prostitute
3 out of 5 stars
The great Seijin Suzuki directs this tale of loyalty, love, dishonor and the nature of being, of all things, a soldier. Set during the Japanese occupation of China, the film tells its story by following Harumi (Yumiko Nogawa), a fallen woman working at a brothel on the outskirts of the war. She meets a soldier, Mikami (Tamio Kawaji), and falls in love, an act which infuriates the battalion‘s commander. The film is of course competently made, but it does suffer from some abrupt, “WTF” editing. The acting is solid (especially Nogawa), however, the tale may fall flat for some Westerners since they may not fathom the whys and wherefores of the culture. Still… there are some truly beautifully crafted shots here. Worth seeing especially for fans of B&W Japanese films.
