Film #115: REVENGE (aka ADAUCHI)
Revenge (aka Adauchi)
4 out of 5 stars
A little known Jidaigeki from 1964 directed by Tadashi Imai (BUSHIDO) and starring Kinnosuke Nakamura (GOYOKIN), Eitaro Shindo (SANSHO THE BAILIFF), Tetsuro Tanba (HARAKIRI), and Yoshiko Mita (THE FALL OF AKO CASTLE). The film is essentially about duty, honor, and bravery in the face of death. Filmed in beautiful black and white, the storyline jumps around in time showing how a simple misunderstanding and perceived slight escalates into a major confrontation. The acting is superb and the direction keeps its eye on the timeline and is deftly handled. There are so many layers to this film that space here keeps me from going too deeply into them. Suffice it to say that this - despite it having a limited cast and no huge battle scenes - is one of the finer samurai films made during the height of their popularity. The jumping around in time can be a little confusing, but stick with it. The ending is REALLY good. Highly recommended.
