Film #130: EATERS
3 out of 5 stars
Uwe Boll produces this low budget zombie flick from Italy which offers very little in the way of innovation. The storyline is a scenario we’ve sort of come to expect (a lone group of survivors fight to stay alive in a world of the dead). While the story is a familiar one, there are some interesting items of note. Firstly, the zombie FX are pretty nifty. The dead actually look dead and some of the gore is eye-catching. The two main characters (Igor and Alen) are fun (especially Igor) and the two of them share the film’s best moments. Now the bad news… the other actors are pretty much useless and are used mostly for fodder. Due to the film’s low budget, the gun play is all done in After Effects and a lot of the environments are accomplished with bad computer paintings and it all gives the film a patina of cheese. Still… as low budget zombie movies go, EATERS isn’t a totally waste of time. The plot - while familiar - moves quickly and again the zombies are kind of cool. Going in, I should have lowered my expectations when I saw Uwe Boll’s name attached, but even so… EATERS is by no means terrible. In fact, given the production’s limitations, it’s a decent enough effort that zombie movie fans just might dig.
