Film #135: UNDERWORLD BEAUTY aka ANKOKUGAI NO BIJO
Underworld Beauty aka Ankokugai No Bijo
3 out of 5 stars
A 1958 Japanese film noir from Nikkatsu Studiosand the great Seijin Suzuki (BRANDED TO KILL, PISTOL OPERA). Shot in moody B&W, the story is pretty straightforward, but the film’s overall visual style is terrific. The acting is solid and Suzuki shows a consumate understanding of the genre. Noir fans will dig the mood and visuals. Japanese cinema fans will love it as well. Suzuki is a name not too many people know, but his films are all requisite viewing. Good stuff!
