FIlm #136: PRIMAL
3.5 out of 5 stars
While the initial set-up is something you’ve seen a thousand times (group of friends out on a camping trip), this tale of a mysterious force out in the forest is really - at its heart - a zombie film. As the group is taken over one by one, we see them either revert to a primal state (Primal… get it?) or be dispatched in short, gory order. The acting is better than one might think (particularly the female lead and the crazy blonde bitch) and the direction is a level above the norm. Early on, there is a nice use of color (deep greens and browns) which surprised me, but once night falls and things start to get tight, all of that falls by the wayside (and good thing too as the viewer becomes more focused on the action). All in all, PRIMAL was a lot better than I thought it’d be and it introduces a new kind of menace to the horror pantheon (which I always appreciate). This is one you may want to take a chance on.
