Film #128: 49 DAYS
3 out of 5 stars
A well done "justice from beyond the grave" tale from Hong Kong starring Stephen Fung (GEN-X COPS & HOUSE OF FURY) and Gillian Chung (VAMPIRE EFFECT & HOUSE OF FURY). The film is paced well & the acting is good, but... there is SO many plot twists that HEAVILY rely on the audience’s knowledge of Chinese culture that it will lose many Westerners. Some blood is spilled and there are a few beheadings, but this is by no means a gore-fest. Sadly, distributor Tai Seng's transfer is muddied and the colors appear muted. Once upon a time, Tai Seng put out some very cool discs, but lately... I've been less than enthused by their product. Chinese cinema fans will want to rent this since it IS a decent little ghost story and they will be used to both the culture and the sometimes illogical plot devices. Horror fans however will find the proceedings too restrained & confusing.
