Film #164: LA SOGA
2.5 out of 5 stars
What starts as a gritty crime thriller ala CITY OF MEN, soon spirals downward into clichéd melodrama and soap operatic clap-trap. Actor Manny Perez (PRIDE AND GLORY) writes and stars in this well-shot, but empty film that midway in takes a hard left turn into the wholly familiar and utterly derivative. While everyone in it is good, the film’s lack of originality hobbles it from rising above the same-ol’-same-ol’. Word of warning as well… there are a few scenes early on which depict the graphic slaughter of pigs that those animal lovers amongst you will definitely find disturbing. In the end, LO SOGA starts out with a bang, but soon fizzles. Perez is an engaging screen presence, but he just is unable to raise the production above his own mediocre script.
