Film #168: WITHOUT WARNING
3 out of 5 stars
This is a film that positively reeks of late ‘70s / early ‘80s sci-fi horror. With a cast of recognizable faces, WITHOUT WARNING is almost a schematic for John McTiernan’s PREDATOR except substitute some local yokels for the mercenary band. Jack Palance & Martin Landau compete in a scenery chewing contest while everyone else tries to keep a straight face. For the most part, they succeed and it is the cast’s earnestness that sells it. The creature (played by PREDATOR’s Kevin Peter Hall) itself looks a lot like something out of an episode of OUTER LIMITS and is only seen near the end of the film. While the production values of this film make it look like a TV movie, the (at the time) uniqueness of its storyline made it memorable and even with its flaws, it’s an enjoyable 90 minutes. Kinda cheesy… but fun.
