Film #171: HARRY BROWN
4 out of 5 stars
More character-based than other films of its ilk (British Action / Revenge piece), this film was a terrific surprise. Caine is at his best here with a very subtle portrayal of a man who’s left with nothing left to lose and sets out to make a difference in his community. It’s kind of a “thinking man’s” vigilante film. Emily Mortimer holds down the gravitas and the rest of the supporting cast does an admirable job, but this is Caine’s film through and through. There are some surprising bits of violence, but the pacing of the story is deliberately slow (which, in this case, is a good thing). Good stuff!!!
