FIlm #179: ISLAND OF THE FISHMEN
Island of the Fishmen
3 out of 5 stars
Sergio Martino (MOUNTAIN OF THE CANNIBAL GOD, TORSO, CASE OF THE SCORPION‘S TAIL) directs this odd little amalgam of THE ISLAND OF DR MOREAU and MYSTERIOUS ISLAND with some knock-off CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON rubber suits thrown in. Richard Johnson (Fulci’s ZOMBIE & THE HAUNTING) plays the heavy here with a gnashing of teeth and goofy motivations. Joseph Cotton & Barbara Bach are along for the rather bumpy ride, but bring only a desire for a paycheck along with them. The FX are bargain basement and, in the end, the mash-up plot collapses under its own weight. That said, it is a fun little ride and it does have its own special kind of charm. Martino fans will enjoy it. Mainstream audiences may find it a little clunky though. Great score BTW.
