Film #162: DOCTOR DEATH aka DR. DEATH: SEEKER OF SOULS
Doctor Death (aka Dr. Death: Seeker of Souls)
2 out of 5 stars
A rather forgettable piece of exploitation cinema from 1973 notable solely for the scenery chewing of television fixture John Considine (THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS, THE ROCKFORD FILES, a truckload of others). The film moves along slowly and only perks up when Considine shows up to mug and metaphorically twist the ends of his moustache. The great character actor Leon Askin (THE ROBE, HOGAN’S HEROES) wanders in and out of scenes without saying a word as the Igor-like Thor. Again, this is one of those legendary films people may – or may not – have heard about and it’s pretty much de rigueur for genre fans to see this one sooner or later. Not a great film by any means, but one that you could easily put on and do something else while watching. Camp cinema fans may also get a kick out of Considine’s over-the-top performance.
