Film #194: ROY COLT AND WINCHESTER JACK
Roy Colt and Winchester Jack

The great Mario Bava does the Spaghetti Western with mixed results. There are some interestingly put together action pieces, but those moments of cool are counterweighed by a silly plot and shoe-horned in “comedy.” The whole thing plays out like an episode of ALIAS SMITH AND JONES… only in Italian. Gone are any hints of style as Bava makes a serviceable Italo-western whose color pallet is unremarkable and is made in an almost “fill in the blanks” fashion. One obligatory shot is followed by another with very little imagination thrown in. Bava is clearly working outside his comfort zone here. This one’s for Bava completists and few else: a clichéd Western and a not very well made Bava film all in one. Judge for yourselves.
