Film #199: HOMICIDAL
3 out of 5 stars
Another rewatch! This PSYCHO knock-off from the great William Castle is surprisingly not as much schlock as I first suspected. The film complete with a Castle intro and a “Fright Break” (a countdown allowing those weak of heart to leave the theater where a “Coward’s Corner” and a waiver stating that they were too scared to finish watching the film and a refund awaited). The cast is mostly Castle regulars, but Jean Arless (aka Joan Marshall) is an odd standout as Warren / Emily. Her maniacal portrayal is hampered a bit by some bad dubbing, but she still gives a creepy performance. Castle was a genius as a writer and director, but especially as a promoter and this lesser known Castle film is worth a look-see for fans. HOMICIDAL is not nearly as good as say MR SARDONICUS (a personal favorite), 13 GHOSTS, THE TINGLER, or HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL, but… it’s totally worth seeing.
