Film #185: GREEN ZONE
3 out of 5 stars
Matt Damon & Paul Greengrass present this Iraq War-era military thriller. Taking place early in the conflict - back when WMDs were neither confirmed or dispelled - the plot is fairly convoluted but the narrative is broken up by well-staged and believable battle set pieces. Damon does a good job as the idealistic soldier with Brendan Gleason doing his best to keep the exposition from being too unwieldy. Kinnear does little but act greasy and spout “we’re trying to bring Democracy to these people” rhetoric. While the message of the film gets a little heavy-handed, there is no denying that Greengrass can shoot solid action sequences and Damon proves himself again to be a quality action star.
