Film #202: THE KILLER IS STILL AMONG US aka L'ASSASSINO E ANCORA TRA NOI aka THE KILLER HAS RETURNED
The Killer Is Still Among Us (aka L'assassino È Ancora Tra Noi aka The Killer Has Returned)

Another latter day giallo yields predictable results. Based on a reportedly true story, this film tells the tale of a young criminology student who sets out to find the serial killer who is targeting young couples as they hump in the woods. For some unknown reason, this girl is given unprecedented access to the facts of the case by the police and she thinks nothing of walking into a “voyeur bar” (do they really have those kinds of things in Italy?) alone. I guess it being the mid-80s, those kinds of things just happen, right? Anyway, the plot lumbers on and is spiced up with a few killings here and there, but given this movie’s reputation as being “one of the nastiest giallos of all time,” I was really disappointed. I mean not much happens of a questionable nature until literally the last 10 minutes of run-time. Ok, I’ll save you 79 minutes of your life – the killer kills a couple and mutilates the woman by slicing her nipped and labia off. There, happy? Now that you know this, you can go rent something else. Ok, so, there are one or two effective moments scattered throughout the film, but… given similar scenes in things like OPERA, BLOOD AND BLACK LACE, and TENEBRE, they don’t break a lot of new ground. Oh, and there’s a ridiculously open-ended conclusion to all of this, so… Again, this is one of those “for giallo completists ONLY” type of things. All others, rent OPERA or a Bava or Sergio Martino flick instead.
