The Killer Wore Gloves (aka Le Calde Labbra Del Carnefice aka Death Calls At 10 O’Clock aka The Warm Lips of the Killer)
2.5 out of 5 stars
Directed by Juan Bosch (Paul Naschy’s EXORCISMO), this Spanish-made giallo from 1975 is a bit of a mixed bag. Plotting is suitably convoluted (after all, it is a giallo) with the requisite red herrings, dead / not dead bodies, and a ton of personal intrigue (there’s a suicide – or is there? – a mysterious boyfriend, and a slew of oddball neighbor characters), but little of it makes a whole lot of sense. That said, the sequences are well shot and staged, but they’re decidedly bloodless and, therefore, uninteresting. Score is by Marcello Giombini (SABATA, ANTHROPOPHAGUS) and it’s a mix of Goblin-eque electronics and 70’s-era hipitude. Keep an eye on the fashions as they are very groovy and the main actress, Gillian Hills (CLOCKWORK ORANGE and BLOW OUT) is a beauty. All in all, THE KILLER WORE GLOVES is a so-so giallo made interesting mostly for where it was made. Nothing crucial here, but it is one to check off your lists and for the lovely Gillian Hills. OK… fun… but not critical viewing by any means.
