Film #221: EX DRUMMER
3 out of 5 stars
What TRAINSPOTTING did for England, EX DRUMMER does for Belgium. The film is violent, crass, homophobic, racist, sexist, and even has a shot or two of pornography… and it’s actually pretty good. One N’flix reviewer said, “It's sort of Trainspotting meets Irreversible meets Man Bites Dog, but with the misanthropy, misogyny and homophobia cranked up to 11” and I agree with that. The beginning is a little slow, but boy does it ever pick up toward the end. Basically, the film is about a punk who by sheer luck works as a famous writer. He is approached by a bunch of handicapped guys to start a band. The guitar player is deaf, the bass player is gay and lame in one arm. The singer is a rapist who paints his walls with blood… well, you get the idea. As the story progresses, you meet their families (who are severely fucked up), their friends (one guy is called Big Dick for obvious reasons), and you follow them to a Battle of the Bands which quickly turns into a huge fight. Fans of extreme, alternative / underground punk cinema will LOVE this. More mainstream fans will be deeply offended by its goings-on. In the end, I enjoyed EX DRUMMER and found its nihilistic attitude kind of refreshing.
