Film #272: FIRST KILL
4 out of 5 stars
Wow! This one caught me by surprise. FIRST KILL is a chilling documentary by filmmaker, Coco Schrijber, which details in open and frank language what it means to kill a person for the first time. Using Viet Nam War vets as interview subjects, Schrijber is smart enough to never get in the way of her subjects. She simply points the camera and shoots and the results are pretty amazing. Speaking to a handful of soldiers, the director uses interview footage and archival photographs (some of which were provided by the subjects themselves) to take the viewer not only into the minds of these men, but also into the situation they found themselves in (war). Again, the result is chilling, but always fascinating. Solid stuff and HIGHLY recommended!
