Film #247: THE MESSENGER
4 out of 5 stars
A poignant film with some terrific performances (for which Woody Harrelson was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor). Both leads are equally great which leads one to wonder why only Harrelson got the Academy’s nod. The script (also nominated for an Oscar) is solid with only one major miss-step: the love story between Foster and Samantha Morton which comes off sort of beside the point. Comparisons to Kevin Bacon’s TAKING CHANCE (which is also an amazing film) are just, but IMO THE MESSENGER’s cast does a superior job. Both deal with the idea of war and its ultimate casualties, but they also look at the cost to those left behind to be the bearer of the worst of all possible news. THE MESSENGER is solid stuff and a film that was criminally over-looked by its audience.
