Film #248: GREAT WHITE aka L'ULTIMO SQUALO aka THE LAST SHARK
Great White (aka L'ultimo Squalo aka The Last Shark)
1 out of 5 stars
The great Enzo Castellari (KEOMA, THE INGLORIOUS BASTARDS, 1990: THE BRONX WARRIORS ) brings us this blatant JAWS rip-off from 1981 starring James Franciscus (LONGSTREET, BENEATH THE PLANET OF THE APES) and Vic Morrow (TWILIGHT ZONE, COMBAT) who are obviously slumming for a paycheck. The film was released in Spain as if it was the third part of the JAWS series and, in 1982, Universal Studios sued the distributors for breach of copyright and were granted an injunction against the film. Honestly, there is literally nothing going right (much less recommend) in this fiasco. From the obvious motorized shark to Vic Morrow’s indeterminate accent (Is it American? Is it Scottish? Is it… oh, who the hell knows?) to the absolutely hilarious helicopter set piece (I dare you not to laugh when it happens), to the equally silly ending, this is pure late ‘70s / early ‘80s drek perfect solely for Castellari completists and home MST3Kers.
