Film #12: SUCK
2 out of 5 stars
While this horror-comedy (man, I hate that term) is competently made, it just didn’t work for me. The esthetic is straight out of Hot Topic. The music (and there is a lot of it) makes REPO: THE GENETIC OPERA look like PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE or TOMMY. Chock full of cameos (Henry Rollins, Iggy Pop, Moby, Alice Cooper, Dave Foley to name but a few), it’s still too klunky and inconsistent for me to recommend it. There are sporadic moments of brilliance, but they’re mired in huge chunks of stupidity and self-referential clap-trap. That said, had this film come out, oh… 8-10 years ago, I could see it almost becoming a cult hit. Fans of “wink at the camera” comedy or even “rock-n-roll comedies” may like this more than I did, but… those fans will be few and far between. As a timewaster, this flick is ok. As a “film,” it’s too calculated (think people in business suits making something “the kids” will like) to be effective.
