Film #16: HAUNTER
2.75 out of 5 stars
Director Vincent Natali (CUBE) brings an overly convoluted storyline to the “ghost victim contacts the living” storyline… with a twist. Abigail Breslin (ZOMBIELAND) is the wide-eyed, set-upon youth and PONTYPOOL’s Stephen McHattie does a journeyman's menacing turn. The thing is… the film seems FIRMLY aimed at the heart of your average 12 year old girl. There’s no blood. No sex. The thrills come mostly from abrupt and jangly “jump-scares” and long-short coincidences. So, yeah… this is horror for your little sister. Even the killer’s motive seems more of the “you’re going to die” variety rather than the “you’re going to die HORRIBLY” one. All in all, the film sort of plays like THE LOVELY BONES for the Goosebumps set. Worth seeing if you’re looking for a ghostly puzzler, but… don’t expect much.
