Film #18: GANGSTER'S PARADISE: JERUSELMA
Gangster’s Paradise: Jeruselma
3 out of 5 stars
Gritty and yet oddly familiar, this tale of a gangster’s rise to power rings with a certain amount of authenticity, but it’s really not anything we haven’t seen before. The acting is competent and the direction well done, but again… the script - though it does give us a glimpse into the seedy underworld of South Africa - is pretty by-the-book. In fact, once the white girl love interest (wearing one of the worst wigs in cinematic history) shows up, it’s all sort of downhill from there. And don’t get started on the scene when the black gangster sits seder with his whole family. By the film’s end, other than the interesting choice of locale, this is all pretty much business as usual. Interesting and sort of fun, but not anything you haven’t seen before.
