Film #26: TENTACLES
2 out of 5 stars
What John Huston, Shelley Winters, Bo Hopkins, Henry Fonda, and Claude Akins are doing in this Italian JAWS-with-an-octopus fiasco from 1977 is anybody’s guess. I mean, maybe it was the money, maybe it was a free trip to a warm climate… who knows? But clearly, they were slumming. Directed by PIRANHA PART TWO: THE SPAWNING and BEYOND THE DOOR hack Ovidio G. Assonitis, TENTACLES is one of those films the MST3K boys would probably have gotten around to had they had the chance. It’s that bad. I mean, what kind of film opens in the first 5 minutes with a baby in a stroller getting plucked off a beach by a giant octopus? And it all goes downhill from there. Cheesy FX and an even cheesier monster litter this film while the aforementioned actors (all pros in their own rights) wander through scenes looking like they’re searching for a phone so they can call their agent. And what ‘till you see the killer whale puppets attacking the giant octopus toward the end. It’ll have you groaning into your popcorn. TENTACLES does have a certain amount of “so bad it’s good” charm. Fans of crappy flicks will love this. People looking for a good giant creature film will want to look elsewhere.
