Film #294: ZOMBIES OF MORA TAU / THE WEREWOLF
Zombies of Mora Tau / The Werewolf
3 out of 5 stars
A Sam Katzman double feature yields mixed results. First up is the highly flawed, but totally entertaining ZOMBIES OF MORA TAU. The film oozes atmosphere even when its budget isn’t gutting its potential. The zombies are basically men in coal makeup, but for some reason they retain their scariness. The real treat is the underwater sequences though where men are lowered on obvious wires and move about slowly while - and I’m not making this up - a bubble machine blows soap bubbles out of an air pack on their back (to simulate air bubbles under water). Yes, it’s ridiculous, but it is also pretty fun. THE WEREWOLF on the other hand… is an avalanche of plaid clothing, way too much drinking and smoking, and a monster cribbed from I WAS A TEENAGE WEREWOLF. Not much happens here, but the acting is earnest. I split the difference here and gave it 3 stars if only for the Saturday Afternoon Monster Movie appeal. ZOMBIES make this worth the rental. WEREWOLF is just an extra thrown in for shits & giggles. Fun - but flawed - viewing for the whole family.
