Film #355: TRUE LEGEND aka SU CAN aka BEGGAR SU
True Legend (aka Su Can aka Beggar Su)
3 out of 5 stars
Okay, this is a tough one. While there is no doubt of the pedigree that Yuen Woo-Ping brings to the proceedings, TRUE LEGEND is, while definitely well made, all over the place. The fighting is, of course, exemplary. The landscape (what isn’t rampant CG) is beautiful. The acting… solid on all fronts. The problem is that the story (and script) is so all over the place that it soon becomes clear there isn’t a unique bone in its body. Take your standard revenge tale and throw in pages torn from every chop-socky and Wu-xia film from the last 4 decades and you come close. The film is far too long with its final act seeming blatantly tacked on and derivative (think FEARLESS meets DRUNKEN MASTER). And the final battle… jeez, it’s like some Vince McMahon wet dream that was brought on by too much Chinese food. In the end, TRUE LEGEND is by no means legendary. However, it is perfectly serviceable (especially for those of you who haven’t seen a lot of Chinese martial arts dramas). But, scratch the service of this powerful genre of filmmaking - even slightly – and you’ll be able to come up with something a LOT better. Okay… by no means great!
