Film #363: SUMMER WARS
4 out of 5 stars
From Mamoru Hosada (THE GIRL WHO LEAPT THROUGH TIME) comes this tale of a family and a cyber world under attack. It’s a little hard to explain the film’s plot, but… it has to do with “Oz” (a sort of suped-up Internet community) which the world relies on. Into this realm comes a rogue avatar that begins to systematically take over. That description might lead you to believe this is another anime slugfest, but… the story plays out via the people at the epicenter of the conflict. The characters are well-defined and their interactions come off real and engaging. The animation is part 2D anime and 3D CG and it is impressive. VERY impressive. There is so much cool stuff coming at you that it’s easy to lose sight of how well done it all is. The final battle is a feast for the eyes and the film’s message of togetherness and cooperation is VERY Japanese. In a sea of lackluster anime, SUMMER WARS is a standout.
