Film #52: THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE
The Lego Batman Movie
4 out of 5 stars
From the same folks who brought you the exemplary LEGO MOVIE comes a better than expected follow-up featuring one of greatest (and misused) characters of all time: Batman. Directed by ROBOT CHICKEN / MOREL OREL director, Chris McKay and written by PRIDE AND PREJUDICE AND ZOMBIES writer Seth Grahame-Smith, THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE is a bat fan’s paradise. FULL of references to DEEP Batman lore (some of the character cameos are WAY obscure: Apache Chief, Black Vulcan, El Dorado, and The Wonder Twins, for example), the film, while not as satisfying as THE LEGO MOVIE, is fun and an absolute eye-full. And the cast… Will Arnett (Batman), Michael Cera (Robin), Rosario Dawson (Barbara Gordon), Zach Galifianakis (The Joker), and Ralph Fiennes (Alfred)... and that’s only the featured players. Supporting cast include Jenny Slate, Conan O’Brien, Doug Benson, Billy Dee Williams, Zoe Kravitz, Kate Micucci, Riki Lindhome, Seth Green, Jemaine Clement, Channing Tatum, Mariah Carey, Hector Elizondo, Laura Kightlinger, Brent Musberger, Ralph Garman, and Chris Hardwick. It’s all pretty amazing. As for the story, THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE is a trove of inside jokes, archaic references, and is a very smart commentary on cinema, comics, and the Batman legend. Fun and a feast for the eyes, some of the shots are truly spectacular in a FURY ROAD kind of way. The film is also smart in the same way Pixar movies or THE SIMPSONS are in that they serve two audiences: the kids and the parents who will bring them. The script begins with a very cool action sequence (and what is now my favorite Batman theme ever) and never lets up. Huge tableaus of cityscape (Gotham is IMPRESSIVE) stretch for as far as the eye can see and there is so much to look at that it begins to get a little overwhelming. And all the while the jokes keep coming. Some are aimed directly at kids, while others reference things that only the parents would know. Lighthearted and goofy in just the right way, THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE easily ranks amongst the Batman films and was a complete hoot. PERFECT for kids… and for adults who want to feel like a kid again.
