Film #38: LEBANON
3 out of 5 stars
Imagine DAS BOOT in a tank and you’ll not be far off. This is an engaging idea and one that is handled fairly well here. The characters are drawn quickly, but effectively, and the sense of dread is established early on and maintained well. There are some visceral and heart-rending moments to be had here (particularly the stand-off with the terrorists). What’s interesting is that the film is low budget, but money is spent well (you never really SEE the tank until the last shot). Also, a lot of the action takes place through a viewfinder. Sadly, the last act stumbles slightly and the script seems to run out of things for these characters to do, but it still manages to succeed despite all of that. The film IS a little on the slow side, but if you hang in there, you’re sure to find a satisfying viewing.
