Film #68: AMY SCHUMER: THE LEATHER SPECIAL
Amy Schumer: The Leather Special
2 out of 5 stars
Geez... what an abysmal hour. Schumer's "I'm a drunk party girl" schtick gets just a little too hard to take in this misguided special. So much of her comedy now relies on the audience thinking her outrageous (she's not) and / or cute. Her delivery ventures into utter "hey, I know famous people," Kathy Griffin-esque clap trap. But Schumer's biggest flaw is that the jokes just aren't here. Premises are delivered and fall flat (in other words, Schumer is left mugging at the crowd). Her topics are poorly chosen (she likes to drink… she likes to fuck… she likes the way she looks…) and are already well-traveled by other (and better) comics. And the outfit... don’t get me started on the outfit. Simply put, it's just distracting and horrific (fashion-wise). Her legion of fans may find it all hilarious and oh-so-witty, but fans of true (i.e., good) standup should look elsewhere for their laughs. This will only frustrate and consternate you.
