Film #90: BADASSSSS
3 out of 5 stars
A informative documentary on the “blaxploitation” movement of the 1970s. While is does cover all the basics, it also glosses over major contributions to the genre. Things like SHAFT & SUPER FLY get a lot of coverage, but THE MACK gets not as much and a film like COTTON COMES TO HARLEM is not mentioned at all. Plus… a lot of time is spent on Tarantino’s JACKIE BROWN (which is an admitted great film), it seems like a weird thing to cover in depth when you’re skimming over other - more seminal - flicks. Still… there are some great moments here and you might want to view it with a pencil and paper in hand in order to add to your lists.
