Film #93: SACRED FLESH
1 out of 5 stars
SACRED FLESH is an attempt by Redemption Video founder and SKIN 2 Magazine photographer, Nigel Wingrove, to reinvigorate the “nunsploitation” genre and the result falls flat on its face due to amateurish acting (and, let it be said, there is not a decent actor amongst the cast) and a ridiculously contrived script (after the initial set-up, the film is basically a series of vignettes). While Wingrove can definitely stage a visually appealing scene, SACRED FLESH has all of the production values of a kink.com video. And that, in a nutshell, is Wingrove’s problem. He’s a pornographer masquerading as a genre filmmaker. Further, he tries so hard to be “edgy” and “blasphemous” that his work comes off ham-fisted and insincere. Shot on digital video, SACRED FLESH is stilted, stagey, overwrought, and – in many ways its worst crime of all – not exceptionally erotic. I mean, how do you make a nun masturbating, nun bondage, and lesbianism boring, ferchrissake? I don’t know… but Wingrove manages to do just that. So, if you’re looking for a good story… skip SACRED FLESH. If you’re looking for good acting… skip SACRED FLESH. If you’re looking for imaginative sets and high production values… skip SACRED FLESH. If you’re looking for some good nun porn… go to Italy. They have tons of it over there and it actually achieves its desired end. SACRED FLESH does not.
