Film #197: HERCULES IN THE HAUNTED WORLD
Hercules in The Haunted World
3 out of 5 stars
More Mario Bava “sword & sandal” goodness. Made in 1961 (after BLACK SUNDAY & before WHIP AND THE BODY), this films possesses all of the creepiness of the former and all of the visual sense of the latter. Bava’s masterful use of color is just stunning and its use here rivals even WHIP AND THE BODY. There are some genuinely creepy scenes in HAUNTED WORLD (particularly the dead rising at the film’s climax) amidst the posturing, flexing, and rock tossing. Christopher Lee stars as the villain and basically plays the same role he always does. Recommended to “sword & sandal” fans, Hercules fans (it’s one of the better ones in the series), and to Bava fans specifically. A truly nice surprise!
