Film #198: THE WEEKEND MURDERS aka CONCERTO PER PISTOLA SOLISTA aka STORY OF A CRIME aka KONZERT FUR EINE PISTOLE
The Weekend Murders (aka Concerto Per Pistola Solista aka Story of a Crime aka Konzert Fur Eine Pistole)
2.75 out of 5 stars
THE WEEKEND MURDERS is an odd combination of Agatha Christie murder mystery (it’s VERY similar to Christie’s TEN INDIAN INDIANS) / comedy / giallo directed by Michele Lupo (who directed a fistful of those abominable Bud Spencer comedies) and starring a host of little known character actors. An Italian production masquerading as an English film, the obvious problem (if that’s not too strong a word) with the film is that it never seems to be able to make up its mind as to what it exactly is. The plot is pretty straightforward and there’s never many surprises… and these kinds of thing hinge on their surprises. The acting has no real standouts although Gastone Moschin (LION OF THE DESERT, GODFATHER II, EMERGENCY SQUAD) as the bumbling cop who is, in the end, a lot smarter than he looks has a fun role. The film is pretty much an innocuous little timewaster that is by no means exemplary or crucial to your film watching list, but it is kind of fun. Fans of Agatha Christie and those kinds of “parlor mysteries” will enjoy this, but it may be too slow and/or quaint for the more hardcore among you. Fun… not terribly original… but okay to put on while you do the laundry.
