Film #222: SANSHIRO SUGATA
3 out of 5 stars
Sorry, kids... another re-watch! A delightful surprise! Criterion has released this, Akira Kurosawa’s first film and man is it a beaut. While kind of short at 79 minutes, it still has a great story and you can see glimpses of The Master’s touch here and there in the framing of his shots and transitions. The action is sort of stilted, but, c’mon… the film was made in 1943. Whaddya want, The Matrix? There are some beautiful shots here and the cast is made up of a who's-who of Japanese cinema. Kurosawa fans will eat this up! Recommended!
