Film #214: 2012 ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE
2012: Zombie Apocalypse
1 out of 5 stars
Made by The Asylum and SyFy (both not exactly known for making quality flicks), this is by no means the worst zombie film you’ll ever see, but it’s pretty damn close. Completely derivative and a blatant rip-off of AMC’s THE WALKING DEAD, this meandering time-waster offers terrible FX (mostly CG), characters straight out of Central Casting, and a pacing that is as uneven as it is yawn-inducing. Ving Rhames’ star falls even further than it has as of late and the rest of the cast (particularly Taryn Manning) are just awful. Loaded with ham-fisted in-jokes: characters named Kirkman… characters saying how they were “caught in an S-Mart“… references to one character having lost his horse… none of it is clever or even inventive, it just comes off dopey and aggressively referential. And there’s the innumerable “Have you lost anyone?” conversations that bog down the second act. And finally, there’s the guns that never seem to run out of bullets thing… In the end, this is yet another example of how uninspired and unimaginative the genre has become. Skip this one… unless you’re a glutton for punishment.
