Film #236: NOLLYWOOD BABYLON
3 out of 5 stars
An interesting documentary on Nigeria’s massive film industry which is created directly by filmmakers (who finance and distribute the films themselves) and marketed via stalls at markets. These filmmakers are making literally dozens and dozens of films every year and all do relatively well. What I found most interesting though is not only the size and scope of the industry, but how prevalent the Born Again Christian culture is within it. A lot of the films deal with some moral quandary or spiritual challenge that gets solved via the hero or heroine’s faith. Bad FX, cheap visual trickery, and shot on consumer market cameras, it’s all pretty impressive. Interesting and provocative, this documentary keep moving and is- like all documentaries should be – a window into another culture.
