Film #241: THE HANGOVER: PART 2
The Hangover: Part 2
2.5 out of 5 stars
THE HANGOVER was a surprise hit of a few years ago, so it’s no wonder that this sequel ultimately got made. But did they really have to literally REMAKE the original film? While there are some differences (and a few genuine laughs), this is basically the same damn movie. That said, the film is well-made, the actors are all spot-on… the problem is that what made the first film so fun is how unique and inventive it was. So, seeing as how “same-ol’-same ol’” this sequel is, it robs it of its exceptional qualities. Frankly, I’d hoped for better. As it stands, THE HANGOVER 2 reeks of studio greed, of rushing something to market far quicker than it needed to be, and of the lack of understanding by the filmmakers of what it is they have here. But ok… Is the film any good. Sure. Todd Phillips is a guy who can make a decent looking flick. And as I’ve said, the actors are all very good. THE HANGOVER 2’s problems rest solely in its unoriginality and libertine roots. See it if you feel compelled, but… just don’t expect much.
